Television and Radio

‘Lindsey is a great TV presence … a lovely storyteller with a pleasantly theatrical style of delivery.’ – Graeme Blundell, The Australian, 21 October 2017.

Taking a break from solving the mysteries of bushrangers: Professor Roger Byard, myself (sans hat), Mike Munro, and archaeologist Adam Ford.

TELEVISION

In May 2016 one of my most deeply held dreams came true when I was invited to join the CJZ team to be part of Lawless, a 4-part Foxtel History Channel series, which opened the cold cases of 4 Australian bushrangers to consider how new developments in science might provide fresh insight into these ‘unsolved mysteries’. I have always wanted to share my enthusiasm for Australian history on TV and now I have had a taste of it I am keen to do more! The series has been a resounding success, with the premiere ‘Ned Kelly’ being the number one show across all pay TV in it’s 8:30 pm time slot, the largest audience for the HISTORY channel since January 2015, and the fourth most watched Australian show in the history of the channel. The Sydney Morning Herald described the series as “handsomely made with gripping re-enactments and a spellbinding, ghostly diorama that illustrates the sequence of events…”

Lawless is available on DVD through Umbrella Entertainment.

My other television appearances have included:

ABC 24, with Kirsten Aiken, October 13 2018.
ABC 24, with, Jo O’Brien October 10 2018.
Child Genius SBS Television, March 2018.
Aussie Inventions, Sheep Shears, The History Channel, April 2018.

RADIO

I have always loved the magic of radio and the way it uses all sorts of audio possibilities to encourage listeners to fill in the gaps with their imagination. For me it is a sublime medium for both history and storytelling. So, I am thrilled whenever I am asked to ‘bring history alive’ on radio. Throughout 2013 and 2014 I did a regular Australian History Program on 891FM ABC Adelaide with Sonya Feldhoff, discussing topics from to the humble history of the backyard. In 2017-18 I did the same with Phil Clark who hosts the Nightlife program on ABC Radio National, where I talked about everything from the challenge of restoring lost voices to the ‘convict stain’ in South Australian history. I have also done an interview with Radio National Arts Today presenter Michael Cathcart, who introduced me to a world of stage craft when I was one of his Awkward Stage ensemble in the 1990s. Most recently, I narrated ‘Hume and Hovell and the pathfinders’, an ABC Radio programme that tells the tale of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell’s 1824 trek inland, based upon my ‘Enterprise & Encounter: A Colonial Soundtrack of the Hume Highway‘.

Throughout 2018 and 2019 I was a co-host of a 45-minute public history program produced by UTS & 2SER. In this capacity I interviewed a number of historians including Ann Curthoys, Heather Goodall, Paul Irish, Stephen Gapps and John Maynard. My other radio appearances included a busy promotional schedule for The Convict’s Daughter, and talks on topics in Australian history.

In this episode of GLAMcity I discuss my findings on Adelaide Ironside and the political lives of colonial women with Chelsea Barnett.
